It's region 8 conference time for the Society of Professional Journalists, and what better place to get schooled on everything industry-related than sunny, fun San Antonio?

This year's event will be held at the beautiful Marriott Plaza in downtown San Antonio. We'll open the weekend with a welcome party and registration Friday evening from 6–8 p.m., and then the conference will begin bright-and-early Saturdaywith breakfast and registration from 8–9 a.m. During the day, there will be a number of educational sessions featuring local, state and national experts on a wide variety of relevant, timely industry topics for freelancers, members of the press, students and media educators. SEE THE FULL SCHEDULE BELOW.

Our goal is for attendees to learn tips that they can take home with them and put into practice in their own workplaces. We'll have portfolio critiquing sessions for students, panel discussions across media, advice from those who cover the Texas border, immigration and the military, and industry leaders will share tips on staying current with social media trends, along with much more. Our sessions will offer concrete advice and discussions about ethics, border coverage, bilingual new approaches, new media and platforms and investigative reporting, all the while providing tools that every journalist can use and apply. Many of the presenters hail from Texas, but we'll also have national experts, including social media journalist Jeff Cutler

San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro will welcome conference-goers at lunch, which will feature keynote speaker Paula Poindexter, professor at The University of Texas at Austin. Poindexter will talk about her new book, Millennials, News, and Social Media: Is News Engagement a Thing of the Past? Also during lunch, we'll honor recipients of this year's Mark of Excellence Awards, which recognize the best in student journalism, and name winners of scholarships from the local San Antonio chapter of SPJ.

A block of rooms has been reserved for SPJ at the Marriott Plaza. Book before April 29 to take advantage of the $139-plus-tax SPJ rate by calling 210-229-1000.

Don't miss this wonderful weekend that will leave you feeling educated, well-connected and better informed.

Registration at the conference is $110 for SPJ members, $120 for non-members, $60 for students, and $50 for the keynote luncheon only.

You can register by phone with credit card by calling

Jerry Townsend, SPJSA Treasurer, at 210.378-6464.
